Project Igloo for the homeless by Iglou

Project Igloo is a attempt by Iglou to provide accommodation to the homeless. It is not a solution to the homeless problem because such a solution is multifaceted. Igloo however help.
The project is initiated by Iglou a Non governmental organization in France.
Many homeless faced the harsh whether of the winter. Some get sick and died. An Igloo is not a decent building a but a good chance to feel warm in the winter.

The igloo project is a meeting between a social challenge and a technical challenge.

What is an Igloo?

Different prototypes of Igloo.

The igloo is an innovative
insulated shelter , designed to protect homeless people in winter.
You may wonder how how Igloo work. The Igloo works by using human heat as sole heating, it can raise the temperature up to 15 ° C for a single person, and up to 20 ° C for a couple , compared to the outside. When it's -5 ° C outside, a couple can sleep in at around 15 ° C.

The Characteristics of the Igloo

1. It is fire resistant.
2. It is foldable, it can be folded and unfolded in a matter of seconds.
3. Natural ventilation has been optimized to help renew indoor air without losing too much heat.
4. It is very hygienic, it is easy to clean.
5. It is very comfortable, large enough to fit two people.
6. Easily to move from place to place.

The origin of the Igloo

According to the originator, Igloo is a desire to solve a social problem using  technical measures. The maker said
. I had the chance to study and learn the basics of heat in my engineering school. This allowed me to do modeling and thermal simulations of a shelter that can be heated passively. The choice of materials was also decisive: it had to be resistant, insulating and cheap. Other constraints were added during the meetings with associations: fire resistance, transportability, etc. The test phase of last winter allowed us to make adjustments thanks to the first feedback from users.

How to support The Igloo Project

The project is initiated by an NGO and it is supported by volunteers. However you can help build an Igloo for the homeless by donating to the project. To make a Donation CLICK HERE. The next distribution of Igloo will be in December, and your donations will help humanity.

Nigerian Architects Lose Bid To Dissolved it Regulatory Body

Four notable Nigerian architects, who sought to get a judicial verdict to dissolve their regulatory body, Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), have lost that bid.
In a suit instituted by  Tonye Braide, Abimbola Ajayi, David Majekodunmi and Dike Emmanuel against ARCON, the plaintiffs, sought among others a legal pronouncement that the present ARCON had since been dissolved, but the court ruled otherwise.
Justice Hadiza Shagari of a Federal High Court, Lagos, concluded that the case was unmeritorious and consequently dismissed it.
While Braide was the immediate past president, Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Ajayi was the General Secretary and Majekodunmi the Chairman of the Students Affairs Committee. Emmanuel was the Chairman, International Affairs Committee in the last executive members of the professional group.
To clear the air over the heated controversy surrounding reports on the court case, the current NIA president, Adibe Njoku said that the plaintiffs in the case went to court in their personal capacity.
According to him, the case has nothing to do with NIA, as there was no time the council of the professional body endorsed the legal action against ARCON.
Njoku said NIA, as a body never initiated any suit against ARCON in the recent time, describing reports that NIA sued ARCON as misleading.

NIA Emergency General Meeting (EGM) 29-7-17

…demands that the Ministry of Works Minister be brought in.
…condemns the extortion of Final Examination fees from Final year students of Architecture.
Submitted by Abdulrasaq A. Usman.
Amidst agitations, suits, counter suits, and most recently the court injunction that sought to prevent this meeting and it’s ARCON ACT ammendment agenda from seeing the light of day, the NIA (Nigerian Institute of Architects)  has gone ahead with the meeting and successfully arrived at seemingly positive resolutions.
Summary of the NIA Emergency General Meeting convened at the Premier Hotel, Ibadan, on July 29, 2017.
Agenda of the meeting was as follows;
  1. Opening prayer
  2. National Anthem
  3. Amendment of ARCON Act CAP19 LFN 2004
  4. Issues with ARCON
  5. Presentation of proposed review of NIA constitution
  6. Follow-up
  7. A. O. B
From Item 3 ( Amendment of ARCON Act CAP19 LFN 2004)
It was suggested that all resolutions therefrom shall be submitted to the Constitution Amendment committee.
Arc Christopher Orji suggested that after the advised submission, the committee must return to the House to interpret same document to everyone before it would be passed into law.
Item 4. (ISSUES WITH ARCON)
  • Introduction of Architects Competence Programme ( ACP 1.0 )
  • Introduction of Architects Regularization (ARP)
  • Non-registeration of qualified members as stipulated by the Laws
  • Introduction of activities by ARCON not contained in the ACT
  • Extortion of Final Examination fees from Final year students of Architecture outside regular University exam procedures.
Suggestions:
Arc Solomon Adeyinka Ogunseye suggested that
  • Ministry of Works Minister must be brought into this matter and must be present during a ‘reconciliation’ meeting between the NIA and ARCON.
  • that there should be a college of past Presidents of the NIA and nobody should spent more than 2-3years in office.
While Arc Emmanuel Olakanmi Fadele and Arc Olufemi Adetokunbo Majekodunmi supported Ogunseye’s suggestion in their submissions, Arc Osi added to it by suggesting that the immediate past president should become ARCON president whereas the ARCON president’s tenure will as well not be more than two years.
Arc Tokumbo Omisore making his submissions.

Arc Olayemi, Arc Tom Ibe, Arc Christopher Orji, Arc Fawode and others suggested that there be the establishment of an elders forum which, if any matter as this arises in the future, would be called upon to deliberate, mediate and profer workable solutions.
Arc David Majekodunmi while speaking also, says a resolution is most needed, and his suggestion was thus;
Arc David Majekodunmi addressing participants.
  • Unconditional registration of PPE successful candidates of September 2016, March 2017 and forthcoming exam by ARCON
  • Apart from the issues of registration, NIA should write to ARCON to stop extorting money from final year students of Architecture.
  • This EGM (Emergency General Meeting) report should be published in select national dailies.
As the meeting progressed, and after the Osun state Chapter chairman of NIA demanded that both ARP and PPE candidates must be registered, a resolution was passed where everyone supported the first 3 resolutions above as put up by Arc David Majekodunmi.
In his closing remarks, the NIA President Arc Tonye Braide advised that we follow the court order that says both bodies shall follow the existing stereoscope which says upon passing the PPE final exams you’re eligible to be full member of NIA and being recognized by ARCON.
Arc Tonye Braide addressing the architects.
He also assured that both councils shall constitute a meeting, hopefully within a month, that is before the month of August ends.
To move for adjournment and closing, NIA 2nd vice president in his own view requested that the two bodies should look for ways to resolve issues early in order to fashion ways and make it easier for young Graduate Architects who wish to be registered to do so.
He noted that the percieved or real difficulty experienced by the Nigerian Architect during professional registration leaves the body entirely at the losing end in what it’s otherwise entitled to in all Ministries.

The Approach, which serves as the drop-off.

I will not forget easily my visit there in 2012, then I was with Yu-Pet Konsult during my internship and the firm happen to have a project presentation at the hotel,it was about building the state(Akwa Ibom) office of a top insurance company.

The architecture that embraced me was awe inspiring, believe me I had to hold myself.Soon, I will get back to some of the outstanding feature of this impressive edifice. I am grateful for such an exposure, and at this point will like to add that, young and aspiring architect who haven't been there should visit it either as a case study, field trip or a mere jamboree. There is definitely a lot to learn.

Zaha Hadid Died aged 65

With deep sense of loss and sadness I write about the death of an enigma, Zaha Hadid.

Zaha Hadid's name was and still is so common to architects (practicing and students) designers and the media. Her design are a beauty to behold albeit some being controversial.

ZAHA HADID 1950-2016
She was born in Iraq, but moved to Britain were she lived for most of her life and practice from her London base office. Architect Zaha Hadid Hons. FAIA, DBE obviously let architecture in a better state than she met the noble profession.  After working with some architects she started her in 1979. From her firm  called Zaha Hadids Architect with it office in London which serve as a nest from where many of her iconic designs were hatched. She has won many awards for her style and uniqueness most prestigious Pritzker Architecture price. She recently won RIBA Gold medal.
With her medal.
For three decades and more, she has wowed the world with her designs, she dare into areas many were afraid to venture, she made curves look easy, she worked impressively with new surface materials. She was a fashion designer though didn't make her name there but left a mark. She also made her ingenuity felt in the hardware industry.

Click to download a little clip of her Architectural works.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
The firm she founded, Zaha Hadid Architect have released an official statement. Read below:

"It is with great sadness that Zaha Hadid
Architects have confirmed that Dame
Zaha Hadid , DBE died suddenly in Miami
in the early hours of this morning. She
had contracted bronchitis earlier this
week and suffered a sudden heart attack
while being treated in hospital.
Zaha Hadid was widely regarded to be the
greatest female architect in the world
today. Born in Baghdad in 1950, she
studied mathematics at the American
University of Beirut before starting her
architectural journey in 1972 at the
Architectural Association in London.
By 1979 she had established her own
practice in London – Zaha Hadid
Architects – garnering a reputation
across the world for her ground-breaking
theoretical works including The Peak in
Hong Kong (1983), the Kurfürstendamm
in Berlin (1986) and the Cardiff Bay
Opera House in Wales (1994).
Working with office partner Patrik
Schumacher, her interest was in the
interface between architecture,
landscape, and geology; which her
practice integrates with the use of
innovative technologies often resulting in
unexpected and dynamic architectural
forms.
Zaha Hadid’s first major built
commission, one that affirmed her
international recognition, was the Vitra
Fire Station in Weil Am Rhein, Germany
(1993); subsequent notable projects
including the MAXXI: Italian National
Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome
(2009), the London Aquatics Centre for
the 2012 Olympic Games (2011) and the
Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku (2013)
illustrate her quest for complex, fluid
space. Buildings such as the Rosenthal
Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati
(2003) and the Guangzhou Opera House
in China (2010) have also been hailed as
architecture that transforms our ideas of
the future with visionary spatial concepts
defined by advanced design, material and
construction processes.
In 2004, Zaha Hadid became the first
woman to be awarded the Pritzker
Architecture Prize. She twice won the
UK ’s most prestigious architecture
award, the RIBA Stirling Prize: in 2010 for
the MAXXI Museum in Rome, a building
for the staging of 21st century art, the
distillation of years of experimentation, a
mature piece of architecture conveying a
calmness that belies the complexities of
its form and organisation; and the Evelyn
Grace Academy, a unique design,
expertly inserted into an extremely tight
site, that shows the students, staff and
local residents they are valued and
celebrates the school’s specialism
throughout its fabric, with views of
student participation at every turn.
Zaha Hadid’s other awards included the
Republic of France’s Commandeur de
l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Japan’s
Praemium Imperiale and in 2012, Zaha
Hadid was made a Dame Commander of
the Order of the British Empire. She was
made Honorary Member of the American
Academy of Arts and Letters and Fellow
of the American Institute of Architecture.
She held various academic roles
including the Kenzo Tange Chair at the
Graduate School of Design, Harvard
University; the Sullivan Chair at the
University of Illinois, School of
Architecture. Hadid also taught studios at
Columbia University, Yale University and
the University of Applied Arts in Vienna."

The pritzker family also released their own statement:
"The Pritzker Family and the Pritzker Architecture Prize organization are deeply saddened by the passing of Dame Zaha Hadid. She was truly a pioneer in the field
of architecture. The 2004 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate, she represents the highest aspirations of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She also served on the jury for one year. Zaha Hadid will be remembered for her talent, creativity, commitment, loyalty and friendship."

Details of Zaha Hadid’s memorial service will be announced shortly. Watch this space.
